Seeking Wisdom and Light for your Life

My personal Testimony and the importance of Proverbs in my life.

I feel that I may have a lot in common with Solomon of the bible. He first chooses Wisdom and later followed Folly. I first followed Folly and now seek Wisdom with the grace to study Proverbs.

When Solomon became king, he realized the enormity of his task.  The Lord appeared to Solomon one night in a dream, and promised to give him anything he asked for.  Imagine receiving that promise from God!  But Solomon had a proper perspective on his task as ruler over Israel.  Rather than asking God for tangible blessings like health, wealth or victory over his enemies, Solomon asked God for “a discerning heart to govern (the) people and to distinguish between right and wrong” (1Kings 3:9)

God was pleased to grant Solomon’s unselfish request and told him, “I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be.  Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for----both riches and honor---so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings” (3:12-13).  God further told Solomon that if he walked in God’s ways and obeyed his laws, God would grant him a long life.(3:14).

This was no ordinary dream.  It was God speaking to Solomon.  And the Lord did as promised.  Solomon became the wisest man that ever lived.  People came from all over the world to visit him and to listen to “the Wisdom God had put in his heart” (10:24)

My life has been like Solomon’s in reverse in many ways. I was first blessed by being one of 8 children in a wonderful Christian family living in up-state New York.  I was first an altar boy and attending church every Sunday and then getting married in the Church to my loving wife Carol (who is the wife of Noble Character in Proverbs 31:10-31). We have had 4 great children and 10 grandchildren that know the Lord.  My career in Life Insurance, Employee Benefits and now Real Estate has provided millions of dollars of income during the last 50 years. That level of success allows for all the material gifts of life but I was still missing the peace and happiness that the wealth was supposed to provide.

One day in Laguna Beach, California, everything changed when three different people in separate situations all told me that Jesus Loved me and He wanted a personal relationship with me and not just the church going kind. I went to my knees and accepted Jesus as my personal Savior. I can best describe the moment as if a light went on inside me and I could see that all the material things I was buying couldn’t fill the God shaped vacuum that was in me.  The missing piece (Peace) was where God would be as I accepted His invitation to accept Jesus as my Savior.

My testimony verse that best explains my feelings is Proverbs 4: 18-19 –

The path of the righteous is like the morning sun, shining ever brighter till the full light of day.
But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness, they do not know what makes them stumble.

Solomon experienced the material gifts of the world and it almost destroyed him because in spite of his wisdom he chose to not obey God and at the end he realized that all the world has to offer is the gifts of Folly and they are all vanity, temporary and worthless.

Today I seek to choose Wisdom’s gifts which are given in the 31 Proverbs. They Lead to Light and finding God’s will for your life. I pray that you will join me in reading the attached material and start your own path to God’s Wisdom.
